Vendor Highlights for the Heritage Holiday Faire

This year has really flown by for me personally and for my "Roost" business.  What started out as a "upscale garage sale" at my barn a few years ago has grown into a passion for presentation, a job, a building block for friendships and so much more.  I have been so honored that my Roost fans continue to support me and others in my line of business by buying local and participating in the events that I am a part of.

In keeping with the events that I am a part of....

In less then 2 weeks there will be an amazing Holiday faire at the Willamette Heritage Center (AKA: Mission Mill Museum)  I have teamed up with the gift shop in the museum called Danner & Soli.  We have called on our friends, business contacts, local artists, and other local business' to all come together and offer a sort of "one stop shopping" experience for all your holiday decor, gifts, and entertaining needs.  Last year we had about 20 vendors and this year we have doubled the vendors to 40!

Vendors are all set for the 2nd Annual Heritage Holiday Faire!

So here it is time for the second Annual Heritage Holiday Faire.  This is a wonderful event for the community.  There will be a great mix of vintage, new, handcrafted, and seasonal gifts to buy.  The kids will enjoy horse rides around the mill and many more activities.

Lunch selections, sweet indulgences, and espresso drinks will be provided by Cafe Venae.  The famous Kettle Korn guy will be there popping on site.

Studio Sub Dio will be doing an on location "photo booth" with studio lighting, backdrops, a large selections of props, and FREE online image download.  For all you out there that do holiday cards and need a family picture this will be a great time to get one.  For more information on the photo booth click here.

So take the day with family and friends to enjoy one of Salem's great historic places.
Danner & Soli and I are working like mad on all of our props for the Faire.  Are focus this year is to create a warm and inviting winter lodge feel to our show.  We have thought up and tested out a few ideas and some were tossed out and some were embellished even more than even we had dreamed up.  The Roost Barn is busting out of its seems with pallets, paint, glitter, and of course feathers!  I'll keep you all updated on our progress and I'll be starting vendor profiles on Monday so stay tuned! 

Aunt Bee's Farmhouse Show is this weekend Roost will be there!

So I just finished my set up at the Aunt Bee's Farmhouse show.  I have 200 square feet of treasures to sell.  I also have to say that I was drooling over a lot of the merchandise that was coming in through the doors today.  I'm getting there early to hand out to the first 23 customers through the doors a Roost gift bag!

Learning to weld.

 I love that I have a whole auto body shop at my disposal!  It comes in so helpful in the projects that I do.  My dad restores old vintage cars for a living and so he has every tool under the sun in his shop.  Since May this year I have made it a personal goal to learn how to weld with a wire feed welder.  I have dabbled here and there with it but I've never done a whole project by myself before.  

So about a month ago my did made another "donation" to the Roost Barn.  A 1985-1990 daybed.  Looking at the thing I thought really?  A day bed what the heck am I going to do with that!  Not many of my friends are looking to buy one they're not really "THE RAGE" these days especially one that's this beat up.  Then I think back to the Molly Mo's show in August when I posted my transformation project on an old baby crib.  Do you all remember that post... it went from old broken baby crib to this:

 

So I thought about this bed frame as a bench and got down to work.  Having the proper tools is essential.

 I actually don't have the pictures of the frame before I started cutting and welding.  I accidentally deleted them.  But here is the frame after I cut it down to size.  I had to cut sections out off the ends of the daybed back so it would be shorter.  Then I had to cut out sections of the sides so that it would be more narrow like a bench instead of a bed.  

  Then I needed to tack weld the bars in place.

 Do to the fact that I am new at this welding thing I needed to grind off some of the weld to make it flat and smooth.

 After welding the frame together I decided to use the rails from the bed as the supports to the wood that I planned on cutting to fit inside the rails.

So after I got the bench together I needed to find something to fit inside the holes that the brass finials were previously in.  (I'm not a huge brass fan and they were dented and rusty in a bad way)

  I did however find some old knobs that were pulled off of a dresser in a previous make-over project.  Just goes to show, never throw anything useful away.

After inserting the knobs in the hole I painted them and did a once over with paint on the whole frame.

Come Junk With Us Ruffles and Rust Show

Just rolled into Salem at 12:30am this wet Sunday morning and I was so super excited about the Ruffles and Rust show pictures so I just had to jump on here and download them!

This event I have been planning for for a couple weeks now.  I usually have a theme for my booth spaces but the rest I kinda "wing it" and usually it turns out pretty good.  However I usually have my mom who is super patient helping me and letting me be my creative self along the way.  Well this show she couldn't make.  I pleaded with my husband to go with me and begrudgingly he said okay.  Well he is a Type A personality and has to plan every detail.  In accepting his help he wanted me to "map out" my booth so he knew exactly where everything was going to go.  So I begrudgingly did so took the pictures of the mock up booth and packed the trailer so it would all come out the way it was to be set out.  Me being the "wing it" thought this a little over the top but hey I'm not going to turn down free help.

Well little did I know while packing the trailer I was going to pull a rib out and not be able to breath, bend, or turn my neck!  I spent all of Thursday (day of departure) trying to get to a chiropractor and massage therapist and get the rib back in.  Long story short I went, they tried, no luck!  So all in all I'm glad I did all the pre-planning like my husband wanted because we set up in record time even with me at 1/2 caliber!

Here are a few pictures of my booth at the show.  I didn't really get a chance to get any other pictures of anyone else's booth.  But all the booths were really inspiring.  It was a amazing show and the Come Junk With Us hostesses were wonderful!

Roost Upcycle project

 So I have a really cool dad!  Although throughout my childhood I was often times embarrassed of the things that he wore (stained holed shirts), that he drove (sometime beat up "vintage" cars), that he brought home (junk)... my dad was just ahead of the "green" or "earth friendly" or my term "upcycled" times ... and now  its or I'm catching up with his logic.  (I feel for my son as I review what embarrassed me as a kid) 

I am sure the term "packrat" or "horder" has been thrown his direction a few times due to the fact that as long as I can remember he has been saving things.  Anything that anyone needed to get rid of or didn't have a use for they'd always call Craig because sooner or later he would have a use for it.  He has always told me that "Free is a very good price" and I guess I have to finally agree 

At the age of 16 I didn't really understand why he would waste his time going over to people's houses and pick up their trash (little did I know that a decade later I'd be doing the same thing).

On that note:  A neighbor of my parents dropped off a beautiful french oak barrel on the doorstep of the Roost Barn. He thought for sure that I would do something with the thing.  Although the earthy smell, the patina of the wood and the zinc metal straps on the barrel called to me I was smack dab in the middle of my summer season of shows.  So I pushed it to the side of barn and put it out of my mind.  Every so often for the last month my dad mentions "Hey you got any ideas for that barrel?" usually in a rush I answer "nope kinda been busy"  Then he'd quitely say "you know you should cut that thing in half and make a planter"  I thought about it for 4 seconds and would answer "that sounds like a plan" and leave it sitting there.  

Time goes by and I have a lazy day at the barn and my dad says to me "come on I got something to show you!"  Whenever he says this sentence I get a little excited and a little nervous.  I know it's either going to be something REALLY awesome that no one will ever find again or REALLY not useful in which I have to REALLY think hard to figure out how to make something cool out of it so I can get it out of my barn (no offense dad cause I know you read my blog) Anyway he takes me out to the barn and I find this:

 So he asks me do you think that you can help me finish it up?  So I say your going to need a seat.  And of course he already had one cut to fit out of an old counter top that he found in the wood pile.  So I say your going to need some foam I can pick you up some today... and he of course had already found some foam in his treasure stash and cut it to fit.  So I ask well what do you need my help for?  and he says "now I need some Roost Reimagined style"  We decided as it was staying with the rustic and recycled theme that we would use an old burlap sack for the cushion cover. Fortunitly I had some burlap sacks out in the Roost Barn.  So here's how the rest of the project turned out...

We stapled the burlap bag over the foam to the bottom of the seat.

Then we grabbed a feed sack recycled pillow out of the Roost Barn too.

  

I love the crest on the bag.  Sooo rusticlly cool!

Last chance to get some Roost goodies at Aunt Bee's House

I have been a vendor here for a little over a year now and have loved the hummmmmm or should I say buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz of creativity and energy of this establishment.  There are some really talented people that make this local business possible. 

I have been really struggling to keep up with the demands of my business of late.  This year I have done a total of 14 shows that have been local, out of town, at my Roost barn, or 2 that I was personally involved in the production of the event.  This has been a blast for me to do but along the way there have been some personal health issues, family emergencies, and life in general.   As a result my booth at Aunt Bee's House has suffered severely.  I have the type of personality that if I can't do something 100% I really get down on myself.  So this month I have had to sit down and take some time to talk with my friends and family and ponder things on my own.  I have written down my goals for the next year and have decided what I feel is the right direction that my life needs to go.

With all this in mind I have decided that I will not be offering Roost Reimagined's wares at Aunt Bee's House as of the end of October.  I will however be a vendor in Aunt Bee's House Farmhouse Shows.  This is a great show that features 30+ local vendors that bring all different types of merchandise. New, vintage, antique, and upcycled.  It's going to be a great event and I am looking forward to it.  The most current show starts on October 27, 28, 29th for more info check out Aunt Bee's blog.
